About BALMUN

The Innerstädtisches Gymnasium Rostock (ISG) has a very long MUN-Tradition. MUN-Director Mrs. Koch made young students experience the annual BERMUN Conference for more than 15 years. Some became serial perpetrators and could not stop until their time at school ended.

It was a combination of multiple factors that created the idea of an international Baltic Model United Nations Conference.

In January 2007 was an open house day of school. In occasion of this day Mrs. Koch wanted present her MUN-passion to the public – a very first “Pilot BALMUN” was held. About 20 ISG students simulated the UN for one day. The name was created; the next step should follow soon.

June 2007 – the euphoria of the G8 summit in Heiligendamm as well as a successful MUN in Oldenburg where the ISG participated became the final impulse. A passionate group of students decided on organizing the first Baltic Model United Nations Conference in the Hanseatic City of Rostock. They faced this challenge to create an event which should be different from other MUN’s. BALMUN would have a personal character where a limited number of participants should get the possibility to develop a cooperate feeling over the four days of conference.

After one year of preparation, hard work and a lot of fun those students could open the school doors and welcome more than 100 young people from all over the world. BALMUN 2008 as the first official MUN Conference in Rostock ever was a great success for everyone – delegates, the school, supporters and organizers.
